Supporting the Next Generation of Aviation Professionals

In 2021, Falko formed a new partnership with the University of Hertfordshire Aeronautics and Space Faculty. The aim being to support engineering students through their studies as well as introducing them and the University to the aircraft leasing and asset management sector.
As part of this commitment, Falko sponsors a design module for first year students. The brief this year was for students to design, build and test a Ground Effect Vehicle (GEV), subject to strict requirements and constraints. The student groups produced differing GEV designs using a variety of production techniques, exhibiting ingenuity and innovation. They then had to demonstrate the vehicle’s capabilities and performance, as well as present the commercial business case for the vehicle during a competition day. The groups were judged by a panel that included Falko representatives, Joseph Uttley, Associate of Corporate Finance and Marcus Rowley, VP Trading who awarded a prize to the winning team.
In addition to the sponsorship of the design module, Falko provides an annual “Falko Aerospace Scholarship” which is awarded to a second year Aerospace Engineering student in recognition of their achievements and to assist in funding their academic journey. Towards the end of the second year, Faculty staff select a shortlist of high performing undergraduate students for interview by a panel of Falko and Faculty Staff. This year Falko was represented by Joseph Uttley and Martin Brennan, Chief of Staff, and the panel is looking for the student who not only demonstrates a broad industry knowledge beyond their academic studies but also exhibits enthusiasm and the commitment to succeed in the aerospace Industry.
Commenting on Falko’s involvement, Matt Goodro, Programme Leader of Aerospace Engineering (Pilot Studies & Space Technology), noted “I am grateful for the value of Falko’s involvement which has added to our first-year design module. The willingness of Falko’s staff to engage with our student learning has been inspirational and gives them access to information about a section of aerospace industry about which they would otherwise be unaware: specifically, aircraft leasing and the related logistics and engineering support. It’s been a pleasure to have Falko on campus to introduce the competition prizes and I’ve enjoyed seeing students decorate their competition submissions with Falko branding. I’ve also been involved with the Falko scholarship since its inception in 2021, shortlisting the candidates for interview and participated in final selection discussions. I appreciate the interest it generates among our students and the consideration Martin, Marcus, and Joe have given to the good that comes from the prize.”
